Labor Day Isn’t Really About Labor Anymore
Most of our major holidays have a reasonably clear identity.
Ask someone what Thanksgiving is about and they will probably have an answer. Ask what Memorial Day is about and most people know that too.
Ask what Labor Day is about and the answers may be a little less certain.
A three-day weekend?
The end of summer?
Barbecue?
Football?
Back-to-school sales?
Mattress discounts?
That seems a little odd for a national holiday whose name tells us exactly what it is supposed to celebrate.
Labor Day was created to recognize workers and the labor movement. It grew out of an era when industrial work was central to the economy and labor itself was highly visible. Factories, railroads, mines, construction, manufacturing and organized trades were not peripheral to American life. They were the economy.
The holiday made sense because labor was easy to see — and important to celebrate.
Today, Labor Day is still on the calendar, but much of the original meaning has faded into the background. For many people, it has become the unofficial boundary between summer and fall.
School is starting. Football is back. Vacations are ending. The grill gets one more serious workout. Summer clothes begin migrating toward the back of the closet.
And Tuesday morning feels suspiciously like the beginning of something.
Maybe Labor Day has gradually become less of a celebration and more of a marker.
The Holiday Stayed. Labor Changed.
One reason the meaning may have faded is that labor itself stopped looking like one thing.
For much of the 20th century, the image was fairly clear. Industrial workers, construction crews, mechanics, drivers, factory employees and tradespeople were visible parts of everyday life.
Then the economic message began to change.
Labor was no longer presented as the preferred future for many kids. The message shifted from “get a good job” toward “go to college, get a degree and move into professional or knowledge work.”
That became the preferred path for several generations, while vocational and technical education was often treated as something less desirable.
White-collar work became the symbol of economic progress.
At the same time, mostly in the background, technology changed where and how people worked. Factories became more automated. Offices became computerized. The Internet moved work onto networks and eventually into homes. Retail shifted toward self-service. Travel agents gave way to websites. Bank tellers gave way to online banking. Customer service moved to call centers, then chat systems, and now AI.
Some work disappeared.
A lot of it simply moved.
Sometimes the Customer Became the Worker
We have talked about this before because it is one of the stranger changes of the last few decades.
You scan your own groceries. You print your own boarding pass. You enter your own medical history into the portal. You make your own reservations. You troubleshoot your own computer. You occasionally bag your own purchases.
Technology often gets described as automation, but sometimes it is simply a transfer of labor.
The employee no longer does it.
You do.
And Now AI Changes the Equation Again
AI may create a different kind of shift.
For decades, technology often moved work from one person to another. Now AI may increasingly move parts of the work away from people altogether.
Software can already summarize documents, write reports, answer customer questions, analyze data, create presentations, produce code and perform pieces of professional work that once required a college-educated employee.
That creates an interesting contradiction.
For years, the safest advice seemed to be: get an education and move into knowledge work.
Now some of the fastest-moving automation is aimed directly at knowledge work, including many of the entry-level tasks through which people traditionally learned their professions.
Meanwhile, something else is happening in the physical economy.
Maybe Skilled Labor Is Coming Back
Data centers are being built at an extraordinary pace. The electric grid needs expansion and modernization. Electric vehicles need charging infrastructure. Factories are becoming more automated. Robotics systems need installation and maintenance. Semiconductor plants, warehouses and advanced manufacturing facilities all require skilled people to keep complicated physical systems running: electricians, HVAC technicians, line workers, maintenance specialists, controls technicians, mechanics and installers.
Increasingly, it means people who can diagnose equipment that combines software, sensors, electronics and machinery.
These are not necessarily the industrial jobs of 1950. They are often highly technical jobs requiring substantial training, judgment and experience.
But they are still labor.
And many do not require the traditional four-year college path.
That doesn’t mean college has somehow become unnecessary. Mathematics, physics, engineering, medicine and many other fields will continue to require extensive formal education.
But perhaps the assumption that a four-year degree is automatically the best route to a successful career is becoming harder to defend.
There is an interesting irony here.
AI is becoming remarkably capable at some forms of knowledge work.
Somebody still has to install the equipment, supply the electricity, cool the servers and keep the data center running.
That seems worth thinking about on Labor Day.
Maybe Blue Collar and White Collar Are Becoming Bad Labels
The old division may no longer fit very well anyway.
What exactly is “white collar” when many people in corporate offices — including technology executives — show up in jeans and T-shirts?
More seriously, is someone who maintains a modern data center blue collar or white collar?
What about a technician working on industrial robots? An electrician installing sophisticated charging systems? A specialist diagnosing faults in an automated factory?
These jobs involve physical work, technical knowledge, computers, electronics and judgment.
And judgment may become particularly important. Machines are increasingly good at following procedures and analyzing information. Deciding what ought to be done — especially when something unusual happens — is a different problem.
The future may place unusual value on people who can do both:
Understand the software.
And fix the machine.
That is not a return to the old industrial economy.
It may be something new.
So What Is Labor Day About Now?
Maybe that is why the holiday feels a little disconnected from its name.
Labor did not disappear.
It changed shape.
The old image of labor became less central just as the economy became more complicated. The holiday remained, but its cultural role drifted toward something easier to recognize: the end of summer, the beginning of fall, football, barbecue, sales and a long weekend.
Maybe that is enough. Holidays do change.
But perhaps Labor Day deserves another look because labor itself may be entering another transition.
The future may not belong entirely to office workers. It may not belong entirely to machines either.
It may belong in part to people who know how to build, repair, install, maintain and operate the physical systems all those machines depend upon — along with the people who understand what those systems ought to do and why.
Labor Day may no longer look much like the holiday created more than a century ago.
But labor may be becoming important again in a way we have not fully noticed.
Maybe the holiday did not lose its meaning.
Maybe the meaning is changing with the work.
