    Winterizing Roses

    Byyogiwan September 22, 2024September 12, 2024

I have more roses in pots than in the ground, and both types need attention to get ready for the Reno winter weather. Here’s a guide for caring for both in-ground and potted roses as we head into the colder months. In-Ground Rose Care Winterizing your roses that are planted in the ground doesn’t have to be overwhelming—it’s more like preparing them for a restful winter so they can come back strong in the spring. If you’re enjoying the last blooms of the season, now’s the perfect time to start thinking about how to give them the care they need to survive the winter. Let Nature Take Its Course Stop feeding your roses in late summer to help them enter dormancy. Just like we need…

    MegaThreats — Book Report

    Byyogiwan September 20, 2024September 20, 2024

Ten Dangerous Trends that Imperil Our Future, and How to Survive Them When I picked up MegaThreats by Nouriel Roubini, I was already familiar with his reputation as “Dr. Doom,” a title he earned for his accurate prediction of the 2008 financial crisis. But even as someone who keeps a casual eye on global financial instability and political dysfunction, Roubini’s examination of the ten most dangerous trends threatening our future hit closer to home than I anticipated. This book is an urgent wake-up call, and while I was already concerned about certain aspects, MegaThreats broadened my perspective on the interconnected dangers we face. Financial Instability and the Growing U.S. Debt What stood out to me the most—and has always been a concern of mine—is the…

How Mobile Health Devices Can Truly Serve Seniors

    Byyogiwan September 18, 2024September 10, 2024

As someone over 80, I’ve been fortunate to maintain good health—no ongoing issues with my heart, lungs, or blood. But many of my friends aren’t as lucky. They manage defibrillation concerns, serious sleep disorders, blood clots, and the risks of heart attacks or strokes. For them, managing health isn’t a casual task; it’s a full-time job requiring constant monitoring. That’s where mobile health (mHealth) devices could play a significant role—if they can truly meet these needs. While these technologies are making strides, they still have to overcome significant hurdles to provide real value to those who need them most. What’s Available Today? Mobile health devices have come a long way, and the advancements are impressive. Right now, devices like the Apple Watch Series 9 and…

Fall is the start of chili, stew and soup season

    Byyogiwan September 15, 2024September 9, 2024

It is getting to that time of the year when chili and soup raise to the top of the selections for dinner. This is one of my favorite times because I really like chili and soups ever more.   I pulled a couple of recipes out of my old newsletters and hope they fit into something that you will like. ITALIAN CHILI Ingredients   1 l bulk Italian sausage 2 T. olive oil 2 cups onion, diced 1/2 lb. stick pepperoni, cubed 1 T. garlic, minced 1 T. tomato paste 1/2 cup dry red wine 2 T. balsamic vinegar 2 cans whole tomatoes (28 oz. each) 1 cup chicken broth 1can each cannellini and red kidney beans, drained, rinsed (14 oz. each) 1 T. dried…

Understanding the Constitution: A 10-Part Series.

    Byyogiwan September 12, 2024September 12, 2024

Not exactly sure how I found this, but I came across a site the provides a summary discussion of the US Constitution in a series of ten five minute videos. PragerU’s five-minute videos on the Constitution focus on key aspects of the U.S. founding document, often from a conservative viewpoint. These videos explore topics like the separation of powers, federalism, the Bill of Rights, and the intentions of the Founding Fathers. They emphasize limited government, individual freedoms, and originalism in interpreting the Constitution. The series aims to educate viewers on constitutional principles, often contrasting them with modern political and social movements. I think this refresher is worth the time and it can be found here https://www.prageru.com/video/the-constitution-why-a-republic?playlist=the-constitution This is the first in the series the others…

Social Media – Is it for you?

    Byyogiwan September 12, 2024September 8, 2024

I’ve heard it time and again: ‘Facebook just isn’t for me,’ or ‘What’s so dangerous about Snapchat?’ While these concerns are valid, social media is more than its risks. It can be a powerful tool for connection and learning—if we use it wisely. As a preamble to this discussion, I want to explain that I was an active user of social media starting back three decades ago. I used it extensively for research in professional activities and then to help me grow my online retail store. I mostly stopped when I retired about a decade ago but have recently become more active again, as I’ve seen how valuable it can be for staying connected and informed.” However, when I started the social media users were…

A last good weekend for grilling

    Byyogiwan September 8, 2024September 5, 2024

There are  probably five or six weeks  remaining for really good grilling. All depends on when winter decides to show up this year. But this weekend seems exceptionally promising not being too hot, not much wind expected and the smoke should still be North  of most of us. With that perspective, here are three grilling recipes to try. Grilled Bone-In Rib Eye  Let it rain with the kosher salt—for the best flavor, you want to season these simple steaks really well before they get grilled. Recipe information Yield  8 servings Ingredients 3 (2-inch) bone-in rib-eye steaks (about 2 pounds each) Kosher salt, freshly ground pepper Flaky sea salt (for serving) Preparation Step 1 The night before you plan to cook the steaks, pat dry with…

Will climate change starve us all?

    Byyogiwan September 6, 2024September 5, 2024

There is a question that everyone seems to have an opinion on. And that has to do with climate change. Some indicate this is a dire situation that will impact us all in the near future while others say there is nothing to be overly concerned about. Those with concerns state the increase in natural disaster around the world is a definite sine of a growing problem. The nay sayers point out that this is just a natural adjustment the earth makes over centuries. There are lots of facts that support the climate change position but that is not the argument I want to discuss here. I want to look at two competing issues: population growth and the ability to feed the world, which are…

    Labor Day Recipes

    Byyogiwan September 1, 2024August 29, 2024

It is Labor Day weekend and perhsaps one of the last days for grilling. While we did see a flash of snow last week, I don’t think we will get anything to talk about for at least another month or three. So for this week’s recipes, here are a couple of Lamb dishes to consider. Both can be accomplished on the grill even is a skillet is called for in the recipe. And neither takes long to prepare. So, enjoy this long weekend! And regardless of what the retail stores are showing, it is still a long way to Halloween. Grilled Lamb, Tomato and Orange Bell Pepper Kababs Ingredients 1 lb fresh lamb, such as a boneless leg of lamb, cut into 1 inch cubes…

Book Report: The Death of Expertise

    Byyogiwan August 31, 2024August 29, 2024

The Campaign Against Established Knowledge and Why It Matters by Tom Nichols Some years ago when I was analyzing industry data and writing reports for company clients, my colleagues and I often discussed the changing environment for information. Prior to around 1995, reports were researched and prepared by knowledgeable professionals and the results were reviewed by others prior to publication. However, with the advent of the Internet, it was becoming obvious that anyone could write a report and publish it and claim relevance and appropriateness even though they might not have either. So the question became, “if everyone is a writer, how to reader determine which are valid based on facts and research and which are not based on feelings, beliefs and imagination.  As it…

Choosing the Right Travel Companion: Tablets vs Laptops

    Byyogiwan August 30, 2024August 29, 2024

Targeted at Boomers and Gen X but mostly aimed at my wife. As technology evolves, the line between devices blurs, making the choice between a laptop, tablet, or smartphone more about personal usage patterns than ever before. This shift is particularly relevant for those who have tried to evade the technology surge of the last couple of decades – Baby Boomers and Generation X – , who are now increasingly integrating digital solutions into their lifestyles. While this group is not spending time in social media sites watching video or other junk, there are needs for  daily conversations, entertainment, the few remaining tasks like banking and taxes or staying connected while traveling. The Drive Toward Portability and Integration During recent family discussions about an upcoming…

    Online Sports Betting Hurts Consumers

    Byyogiwan August 27, 2024August 23, 2024

I have been saying for many years that gambling is the worst thing that has happened to sport ever! It has changed the focus from the teams and competitors to where money can be potentially made on the games, the plays, the players and much more, It started with fantasy which move concentration away for the play of the game to the performance of individuals. What happened to most sports are a team game? What I have been somewhat concerned about is what the unintended consequences might be as gambling becomes more of the driver of sports. Not sure if it was unintended, but the major realignment of the college conferences is one change. So, universities such as Stanford and California are in the Atlantic…

Here we are in the second week of the FedEx Cup playoffs and there are a few surprises that seem to pop up each week. That Schauffele is among the leaders is not one of them. Hideki winning last week is not a total surprise. What is not seen in these playoff is any appearance from Tiger Woods. Many of the golf announcers have stated over the last few months that this…

Book Report – How to Avoid a Climate Disaster

    Byyogiwan August 21, 2024August 19, 2024

This is from a few years ago but still worth a review. How to Avoid a Climate Disaster by Bill Gates caused quite a bit of discussion when it came out in 2021. And while he did extensive research on the challenges of addressing climate change, the potential solutions still remain outside of a practical time frame. Some of the key points covered start by stating the primary problems: to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, the world needs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from 51 billion tons per year to zero by 2050 many different sectors ae responsible for emissions including; electricity generation, manufacturing, agriculture, transportation, and buildings there is no over arching multi-government agreement on an approach to addressing the global issues….

Reverse Mortgage – The other half of the picture

    Byyogiwan August 19, 2024August 19, 2024

A few weeks ago, I posted an article on the benefits of reverse mortgages, and they are substantial. Eliminating your monthly mortgage payment should substantially improve you cash flow. Having the ability to easily access the previously untouchable equity in your property should provide quite a bit more flexibility in dealing with significant expenditures. But there are some downsides to these mortgages as well. One of the biggest is that you must have more that 50% equity in your property and more is better. These mortgages are generally targeted at folks who have had their properties for a long time and have built up quite a bit of equity but that equity is difficult to access without either refinancing or selling the property. Ther first…

A Game for the Election Season Over the years I have advocated for people to listen more and talk less. In addition, In addition, I suggested that people take into account less what people say and more of what they do. Both good practices! One other suggestion that I recommended is to observe how people respond to things. Then I ran across this article which illustrates many of the things that I have seen in the past. But this is done as a game and with sense of humor. But it is still very relevant! I copied this article rather than just reference it because the original was saturated with ads. If only Jerry Jones could build a football team as well as he builds a brand. The Dallas Cowboys may not have made a Super Bowl in 28 years, but it’s hard to argue with the investment: Owner Jerry Jones bought the NFL team in 1989 for $150 million, and now they’re the first pro sports franchise to be worth more than $10 billion, per Sportico. If you shaved $52 million off their valuation for every one of the 48 points the team gave up to the Green Bay Packers in their playoff shellacking last year, they’d still be the most valuable franchise in the NFL. The regular-season specialists generated $1.2 billion in revenue in 2023 alone, 50% more than the No. 2 Los Angeles Rams…

Car Decisions  –  Gas vs Electric

    Byyogiwan August 9, 2024August 9, 2024

I have been thinking about new car options. Not that I am in the market since my 2016 VW Passat just reached 40,000 miles and at that rate should last another eight years or so. But my wife’s 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe has nearly twice as many miles and based upon past experience may come up for consideration in the next year to two. So, I have been thinking about cars. Also, I have seen quite a few articles about electric cars (EVs) and the supposed advantages of them. But, looking at sales in the US, there does not seem to be a major move away from standard gas vehicles. Although there has been a pretty good growth in sales over the last five years….

Usually these come from recommendations from friends and sometimes from referrals in the press or social media. I don’t remember where the recommendation came from for this book, but I did find it very interesting. Here is a brief review. I recommend you find this book and read it. And where do you go for grilling tips?  Of course, to the grill master – Bobby Flay. Here are some of his recommendations: Charcoal and gas grills both work fine. Charcoal provides a smokiness that gas cannot imitate.  But gas is quicker, easier to control and easier to clean. Never use lighter fluid. Use a chimney starter. Be sure the grates are clean. Use tongs for most things and do not use a fork. For items the need gentle handling, use a wide spatula. For brushing, a good quality paint brush works as good as a…

There were several attempts from Your Smart Kitchen (a quality cookware store) to Brightzone (a marketing consulting effort) with several inbetween. And one of the things that annoys me and continues to annoy me more is where a quality author’s name is assumed by someone else. I’m not sure how wide spread this practice may be and it is not the normal case with the majority of authors I enjoy which includes: Michelle Baldacci Michael Connelly Lee Child Lincoln Child Harlon Coban John Grisham James Patterson Brad Thor Others The two most bothersome…

Here is one that I used from July. It might still be a bit hot for this but I like pasta and can have it any time hot or cold. Homemade Pasta Sauce  Ingredients 1 onion 9 medium size beefsteak tomatoes 1 (6 ounce) can Italian-style tomato paste 5 cloves garlic 2 tsp olive oil 7 cups water ½ cup red wine (merlot) 3 tbsp Italian seasoning 2 tbsp dried…

    Reverse Mortgage – Benefits

    Byyogiwan July 25, 2024August 1, 2024

There has been increasing promotion regarding reverse mortgages lately. Even ads with Tom Selleck are showing up. I guess the NYPD commissioner add validity to the offers. But what are the advantages of a reverse mortgage? The first and most obvious is no monthly mortgage payments. If monthly cash flow is an issue, this could be very important. Homeowners are not required to make monthly mortgage payments. Instead, the loan is repaid when the borrower sells the home, moves out permanently, or passes away. Second, it allows homeowners access to equity. With the raise in home prices over the last two decades, some homeowners may have quite a bit of equity that is mostly inaccessible. A reverse mortgage allows homeowners to convert a portion of…

    Is this a beginning?

    Byyogiwan July 16, 2024August 1, 2024

I have been retired for some time and have found that I need more to do. So I am going to fall back on my decades of experience as a technology executive and consultant and start writing about things of intertest. Much of this may be about technology but since most of my over 70 and 80 friends are not always interested in technology I will be looking into other things as well. Sort of a hodge podge of things which could even include some of my recipes from in Your Smart Kitchen days. The purpose of this is to see if the links between my blog site (yogiwan.us) and my social media sites are working properly. So, if you see this, that is a…

    Unlocking the Potential of 5G

    Byyogiwan July 15, 2024July 15, 2024

We have all heard the advertisement about 5G but do you know what this really means or what’s in it for you? I will try to expand on this a bit. The 5G stands for the fifth generation of mobile network roll out. Early networks started in the mid-1980s and supported early devices such as the Palm Pilot, car phones and such. Quality was inconsistent and slow. 2G started replacing the first generation in the early 1990s and introduced features such as SMS and basic data services. 3G didn’t come around until 2003 and took a few of years to get fully installed. 4G was introduced in 2009 and 2010 as was a big step up in reliability, speed and services such as video streaming,…

    Is AI for you?

    Byyogiwan July 12, 2024July 12, 2024

Most of my friends have heard about AI (artificial intelligence and have decided that this is something they do not have to pay much attention to. It is too confusing, too complex and does have much day to day applicability. I would suggest in many cases this is probably true but on the other hand I would suggest that they look into GhatGPT. This is a easy to use AI tool that can provide many opportunities. It can be used as a search alternative to Google. As an example, I asked Google where the SF Giants ranked in home runs yielded and received back a listing or total home runs by team from last year. So I asked that same question to ChatGPT and received…

    Features of WordPress

    Byyogiwan July 8, 2024July 10, 2024

WordPress, a widely used content management system (CMS), offers a variety of powerful editing features that make it an ideal platform for both novice and experienced users to create and manage websites. The following overview highlights key editing features in WordPress that enhance the user experience and streamline content creation. The Block Editor (Gutenberg) The introduction of the Block Editor, also known as Gutenberg, revolutionized the way users create and edit content in WordPress. This editor uses a block-based approach, allowing users to build their pages and posts by adding different types of content blocks. These blocks can be anything from paragraphs, headings, and images to more complex elements like galleries, columns, and buttons. Each block can be customized individually, giving users granular control over…

    This the start . . .

    Byyogiwan June 23, 2024July 11, 2024

As you can see, I am starting a new blog and it should be an experience. Back a few years ago, I had a blog associated with my online store, Your Smart Kitchen, but since that business closed I have not kept up with things. You do forget a lot after ten years or so. So this is somewhat of an experiment and you can expect changes to occur as I gain familiarity with the tools for blogging again. Getting to this point has taken several weeks and you can see it is still pretty rough in spots. Hopefully that will get better over the next few weeks. The objective is to set down some of my observations and thoughts on a wide range of…
